Step 2 – Type of Education (Uni, Tafe, School?)
There are four main sectors:
- Universities
- Vocational education and training
- Schools
- English language training
Universities offer undergraduate/ postgraduate courses.
Fields of study - business, economics, education, environmental science, engineering, agriculture, health sciences, humanities and social sciences, information technology, law, mathematics and computing, medicine, science and visual/performing arts.
Vocational institutions offer practical, career oriented courses including business, computing, marketing, tourism and hospitality.
Australian schools offer an education style that is highly interactive, encourages students to participate and develops personal skills and confidence. All schools offer English, mathematics, science, arts, technology and languages. You may also be able to study such diverse subjects as digital media, agriculture, graphic design, music and accountancy.
English language studies these can cater for everyone from beginner student to advanced student to teacher training.
Step 3 – Other Requirements (Financial, English)
Financial considerations
The majority of international students in Australia are full-fee paying students. Student loans are not available for international students in Australia.
You will need to consider whether you can afford to study at a particular institution.
Fees vary according to the institution and discipline selected. For example, science and medical courses that require a large amount of laboratory and fieldwork are more costly than arts courses.
To be granted a student visa you will need to declare your financial ability and in most cases you will need evidence of having sufficient funds to pay part or all of your tuition fees.
How to calculate financials and the evidence required. -
Working while studying
If you intend to get a job while studying in Australia then the money you earn from working in Australia should only supplement your income and not be your primary source of income.
You can only apply for a new student visa with work rights after you arrive in Australia and have begun studying.
You will only be permitted to work a limited number of hours. Therefore you should not expect your earnings to cover all your living costs.
English language requirements?
Most institutions require students to have a level of English language proficiency.
There is a separate (lower or higher than the Education Institution) English proficiency requirement for the visa.
There are many English language courses with starting dates throughout the year to prepare you for further study in Australia.
Step 4 - Applying for course admission
Previous step - You have selected your preferred courses and institutions.
Documents needed for an application
- Certified Pass port copy (Information Page)
- full details of previous study, including copies of qualifications already awarded to you
- evidence of your English language proficiency (for undergraduate and postgraduate studies, and vocational education and training)
Submitting the application form
We will attach all the required documents and submit them direct to the institutions.
Confirmation of enrolment (CoE)
The institution will assess your application and advise if you meet the entry requirements
If successful, the institution will send you a letter of offer.
eCoE
You may be required to undergo a pre-visa assessment before a eCoE. The eCoE is the only accepted evidence of enrolment for processing student visa applications.
You may be required to pay tuition fees before applying for the student visa, generally you will require payment of at least one semester of course fees.
If you are currently enrolled in a course of study, you might be granted provisional acceptance on the basis of previous academic performance in anticipation that your final examination results do not differ greatly from the grades already attained.
Step 5 - Applying for a visa
Previous step
- should have a letter of offer before a visa application
- Student must have a valid visa for the duration of the study.

Before re-applying for a student visa, you should carefully consider what evidence you can provide to satisfy the decision maker that you meet all the requirements for a student visa.
