How to get married in Sri Lanka |

Our Sri Lanka office will assist you in relation to these matters. Marriage can be registered after 4 days of arrival to Sri Lanka. We will need to contact the Additional District Registrar in the relevant Divisional Secretariat Office or the Marriage Registrar within the area you are temporary residing in Sri Lanka as such we will need the exact location of the marriage.
Documents required by the bride and bridegroom
Note: You will need the original of each document to bring with you to Sri Lanka and two copies of each document to be forwarded to us.
If you are considering a wedding within the next eight weeks, you should telephone us immediately to discuss the arrangements.
- Residency You will need to be resident in Sri Lanka at least 4 days before the wedding.
- Proof of ID You will need to produce your original birth certificate and a
- Passport, valid for at least six months from date of entry.
- Proof of status You must obtain an affidavit signed by a solicitor, stating that neither of you has been previously married and that there is no legal objection to the marriage.
- Divorced If either of you is divorced you must produce your decree.
- Widowed If either of you has been widowed you must produce the death certificate of the deceased spouse (and your former marriage certificate may be needed to be shown)
- Age restrictions The minimum age to marry without parental consent is 18 years old. If you are younger then you must obtain evidence of parental consent in the form of a sworn affidavit.
- Name change I f your name has been changed by Deed Poll, you must provide legal proof, stamped and signed by a solicitor. This also applies if you are a divorced woman who has reverted back to her maiden name.
- You must provide your full names and addresses and those of your parents, as well as your professions.
- If your name has been changed by deed poll then legal proof must be shown, stamped and dated by a solicitor (including if you are divorced and have reverted to your maiden name).
- If adopted the adoption certificate must be shown.
- please note that single sex ceremonies are not permitted Sri Lanka.
