Application for Resumption/Retention of Sri Lanka Citizenship under Citizenship (amendment) ACT No. 45 of 1987

The purpose of the amendment to the Sri Lanka Citizenship ACT No. 45 of 1987 is to allow Sri Lankans to apply to resume/retain their Sri Lankan Citizenship, when they become a citizen of another country.

 

The Australian Citizenship Amendment Bill of 2002 permits Australian passport holders to apply for citizenship of another country whilst retaining Australian Citizenship

 

Any person/s ceasing/ have ceased to be a Sri Lankan citizen can apply for resumption of the Sri Lankan citizenship on the prescribed form available with the Sri Lankan Citizenship Division. Such person/s should clearly have an intention to reside in Sri Lanka.

 

Checklist:

The Citizenship Division of the Ministry of Public Security needs documentary evidence that the applicant was/is a citizen of Sri Lanka, the following documents have to be forwarded with the duly completed application;

  • Birth Certificate and a photocopy
  • Father222s Birth certificate and a photocopy or an affidavit
  • If a citizen of Sri Lanka by registration, a certified copy of the relevant certificate
  • Certified copies of last two pages of the present Sri Lanka passport
  • Documentary proof of remittances in Sri Lanka for last 4 years
  • Documentary proof of your assets such as; lands, investments, shares, etc.in Sri Lanka (Minimum Rs. 2.5 million)
  • Intended investments in Sri Lanka substantiated with the documentary evidence.
  • Declaration stating how Sri Lanka will benefit if you are granted Dual Citizenship
  • Documentary proof of your professional attainments
  • Your Marriage Certificate and copy
  • Certified copy of Citizenship Certificate if you have subsequently become a citizen of another country
  • Request in writing with contact details: Tel. no., E-mal address and Fax no. (if available)

If you have not yet taken up Australian citizenship and you wish to retain your Sri Lankan Citizenship it is advisable that you contact us.

 

Fees:

The current fee for Dual Citizenship is as follows;

Applicant Rs. 200,000/-
Spouse    Rs. 50,000/-
Child below 18 years (if applying together with parents) Rs. 50,000/-

 

These fees are payable only if your application is successful.

 

Children born in Australia and if parents are Sri Lankans (ie father should be Sri Lankan citizen at the time of birth) could be eligible to hold a Sri Lankan and an Australian passport until they reach the age of eighteen years. Please check that these children have been registered under Sec. 5(2) of the Citizenship Act (see notes on the last page of the Sri Lanka Passport) with the Sri Lanka High Commission in Australia.

 

Separate applications will have to be made for individuals in the family for retention of citizenship.
